The Mystery of the Mary Celeste: The Solution

The Mystery of the Mary Celeste: The Solution

The disappearance of the American brigantine Mary Celeste is the most celebrated enigma in maritime history, but after years of exhaustive research, Richard Rees has unravelled the mystery.

Written in factioMary-Celestenal form through the eyes of detective/journalist Michael Callaghan and his estranged wife Colleen, the book tells of a fascinating web of intrigue and deceit involving not only one of America’s greatest fraudsters, “Brains” Sweeny – mastermind of the infamous Tweed Ring who over a decade during the 1860s and 1870s, stole over $200,000,000 from the city of New York — and also the political machinations of the Church of Rome, conducted through its secret arm, Opus Dei.

On November 4, 1872, the brigantine Mary Celeste left Pier 50, East River, New York, and with a complement of 11, including the wife and 2-year old daughter of her captain, Benjamin Briggs, sailed into the grey Atlantic to become perhaps the greatest of all sea mysteries. One month later, December 4, she was found abandoned, but completely seaworthy, some 600 miles off the west coast of Spain, with no sign of anyone on board.

In solving the mystery, Richard Rees has produced a gem of literary detection and a masterly piece of storytelling.
